What is the Head Shaving Ceremony all about?
(For first year students only)
The Head Shaving Ceremony is about renunciation. Renunciation from what? Renunciation from common mundane life and all its illusory pleasures. By renouncing not only one's old "sense desire based" lifestyle but also all attachments, one enters into a monastic lifestyle aimed at the attainment of Buddhahood.
The Buddha also renounced his home-life at a young age by leaving his palace and cutting off his long hair.
In This ancient Chinese Buddhist ceremony the first year students will officially renounce their old ways and be formally accepted into the monastic order.

What is Sramanera Ordination all about?
(For second and third year students only)
After the observation period of one year it is now time for the novices to accept the Ten Precepts and become ordained sramaneras.
A Sramanera is a term used for male or female Buddhist novices who have committed themselves through the lower ordination to observe the ten precepts. The minimum age for ordination of a sramanera is seven - that was the age of the historical Buddha's son, Rahula, the patron of sramaneras, when he entered the Sangha. We must remember here that this is not the full Bhiksu ordination during which the sramanera takes 250 precepts.
